IMMERSIVE HEALTH

Participatory feedback from the co-design feasibility trial suggested a range of backdrops, allowing those who had experienced struggle or trauma to immerse in a setting with potential to act as an image 'transfusion', i.e. replacing thoughts they wanted to let go of with new ones.

THE TIMELINE

EARLY STAGE TRIAL RESPONSE

"The chronological nature of the linear process is useful in that an individual can clearly and visibly identify that their life is made up of different epochs and that various traumatic experiences may have befallen them at different times. It can help compartmentalise and separate early childhood, adolescence, and more recent personal history."

J27 SUICIDE IDEATION

"Cleansed. I think many individuals who experience childhood trauma were not equipped as a child with the understanding and hindsight they now have as an adult to reflect and expel said trauma. With this in mind and after having been through the process I feel the linear/chronological trajectory is a necessary element/component to the process. It provides a structure where arguably there was no structure before the process which created further confusion and disillusionment."

J28 CHILDHOOD TRAUMA

"I think the process could assist individuals presenting childhood trauma as it allowed me to see the difference between the past and present of my life, due to my eating disorder, from where it spiralled out of control to where I am now. I feel the chronological order of the sequence made me think in depth of the cause to my mental illness, which I feel would apply to other individuals as it would allow them to reveal everything they remember about their deep past, past and wants or desires for the future, which they may have ignored or not opened up about."

J17 ANOREXIA

"The rectangular room plays a vital part as it’s the physical/tangible foundation and formation of the process; you could reason that it is ‘enough’ and it provides the linear/chronological structure. I think introducing ‘technological play’ in addition to this structure could be a strong component sensually and would provide the individual with the feeling of being immersed within the environment."
